Arctic oil conflicts
October 2, 2008
Arctic: Melting of Arctic ice and snow in the future should cause bigger troubles as environmental experts could predict.
Geological research of Arctic surface brought out amazing results. Ice cover hides enormous quantities of oil and earth gas, hypothetically about 400 billion of barrels. For comparison, Saudi Arabia’s Ghawar oil field, which is the biggest oil field in the world, contains about 170 billion barrels of oil. Therefore, even the experts did 50% mistake, there is still a lot of oil under the Arctic surface.
Some countries (Russia, USA, Canada, Denmark, Norge and Great Britain) have already put their requirements for parts of the Arctic territory.
Russia already claimed ownership over the North Pole
Reputable military magazine Jane’s has announced that in the future Arctic territory will become the object of global conflicts. Canada affirms that it will protect its part of Arctic region, but in the year 2001 Russia already required (at United Nations) ownership over North Pole.
By speculations of Jane’s these troubles could lead to the war conflicts till the year of 2020.
